COMPUTER WORKSTATION EVALUATION

Self-Evaluation Check Sheet

1) Keyboard and Mouse

Keyboard Height Adjust keyboard height so your arms and forearms are at right angles or slightly greater. Forearms and hands form straight lines.
Keyboard-to-User Distance Set the keyboard-to-user distance to allow your shoulders to relax with your elbows hanging close to your body.
Keyboard Slope Position the keyboard flat or slightly negatively sloped.
Mouse-to-User Distance Place mouse right next to the keyboard.


2) Chair

Seat Height Adjust seat height so your feet are flat on the floor or footrest. Bend your knees at right angles with thighs horizontal to the floor.
Seat Back Adjust seat back to support the lumbar curve of your lower back
Seat Pan Depth Adjust seat back so front edge of seat pan is about 2 to 4 inches from the back of your knees.
Seat Pan Tilt Adjust seat pan tilt so your hips and tops of thighs are at right angles or slightly greater.
Armrest Position Adjust armrests so that they are out of the way while you type, but provide support while you perform other activities, such as using the phone or sitting in meetings.


3) Monitor

Monitor Height Adjust monitor height so the top of the screen is at or slightly lower than eye level.
Screen-to-User Distance Place screen so that it's approximately arms distance away, or about 16-28 inches.
Monitor Alignment with User Place monitor and keyboard directly in front of you.
Visual Comfort of Screen Position monitor to avoid glare. You may need to consider adjustments such as lighting or a glare screen.


4) Work Environment and Surface

Leg Clearance at Workstation Width = 2 inches + hip width
Height = highest points of thighs or higher
Depth = allows proper sitting position while giving foot and knee clearance
Placement of Frequently Used Items Keep frequently used items, such as the telephone, within arms reach.
General Task Lighting Ensure lighting is not direct or overly bright.


5) Work Practices

Frequency of Breaks Get out of your chair at least once every hour. Take a microbreak of five minutes for every 30 minutes that you use the keyboard
Keyboarding Posture Keep your wrists straight and avoid supporting wrists on any surface while typing.
Sitting Posture Sit with an upright or slightly reclined posture.
